- <p> "A place of sex, women, fun." These words may read like a tag
- line to a 900-number ad. But according to New Yorker writer
- Janet Malcolm, they were psychoanalyst JEFFREY MASSON's plans
- for invigorating the venerable Freud Archives. For 10 years,
- and all through a $7.5 million libel suit, Masson has denied
- using the phrase. Last week a California jury agreed that Malcolm
- defamed the controversial shrink by fabricating this and four
- other quotes in a 1983 profile. The panel decided that the journalist
- (but not the esteemed literary weekly) should be held responsible.
- However, it remained deadlocked over how much Masson should
- receive in damages. That means the ordeal isn't over. A second
- trial is likely to follow.
