  18. <p>     "A place of sex, women, fun." These words may read like a tag
  19. line to a 900-number ad. But according to New Yorker writer
  20. Janet Malcolm, they were psychoanalyst JEFFREY MASSON's plans
  21. for invigorating the venerable Freud Archives. For 10 years,
  22. and all through a $7.5 million libel suit, Masson has denied
  23. using the phrase. Last week a California jury agreed that Malcolm
  24. defamed the controversial shrink by fabricating this and four
  25. other quotes in a 1983 profile. The panel decided that the journalist
  26. (but not the esteemed literary weekly) should be held responsible.
  27. However, it remained deadlocked over how much Masson should
  28. receive in damages. That means the ordeal isn't over. A second
  29. trial is likely to follow.
